How to Use NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® Coffee Pod Machines

Do you want delicious coffee without the hassle of going to a coffee shop? Our pod machines offer a simple way to enjoy barista-quality coffee at home, with just the push of a button.

Curious about how they work? Whether you're a coffee enthusiast or a complete beginner, this guide will show you how to brew the perfect cup with your Dolce Gusto machine.

How do coffee pod machines work?

Let’s get straight to it. Coffee pod machines work by piercing a sealed pod (a little capsule of coffee grounds) and then running hot water through it, giving you a perfectly measured cup of coffee without any mess. All our NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® machines also have a built-in machine filter to prevent any coffee granules from seeping through, which could potentially ruin the coffee’s taste. Our variety of coffee pods offer lots of drink options to suit your mood and occasion, from a strong espresso, to a bold americano, or even a hot chocolate.

Setting up your NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® coffee machine

Inside the box, you'll find your new coffee machine, the water tank, the drip tray, and the instruction manual. Setting up your coffee pod machine is simple. Just snap the water tank onto the back, adjust the drip tray to fit your mug or cup, and plug it in. In the following sections, we'll delve deeper into the different elements to ensure you get the most out of your new coffee maker.

The water tank

It's where the water that makes your coffee is stored. Most machines have a clear tank so you can easily see how much water is inside. Remember to fill it up with fresh, cold water each time you want to make a cup of coffee.

The drip tray

The drip tray sits beneath the coffee spout and collects any leftover coffee or water. It's important to empty it after each use to prevent spills and keep your machine clean. Some drip trays even have a removable grid that you can wash in the dishwasher. Check the instruction manual to make sure yours is dishwasher safe.

The instruction manual

The instruction manual is your go-to resource for everything you need to know about your coffee pod machine. It has detailed instructions on filling the water tank, inserting coffee pods, adjusting the coffee strength, cleaning the machine, and troubleshooting common problems. Be sure to give it a read before using your machine for the first time.

1. Before you make your first cup of coffee, you will need to prime the machine.
2. Begin by filling up the water tank up to the indicator line
3. Turn on your coffee machine, and wait for the indicator light to stop flashing and become a stable red light (this means the coffee machine is ready)
4. Run water through the machine to ensure the machine is clean and ready to go
5. That's it! Your machine is now ready to make you a delicious cup of coffee.

How to operate coffee pod machines

Now that your machine is set up and ready to go, let’s make your first cup of coffee. Easy-to-follow steps below:
- Fill the water tank up to the indicator line and turn on the machine
- Wait for the indicator light to stop flashing and remain steady - this means you’re ready to make your coffee
- Lift the handle and insert your chosen coffee pod into the coffee machine
- Lower the handle and make sure the pod is securely in the machine
- Select your desired coffee size: choose from a range of sizes to determine the amount of water used. This allows you to customise your brew to your preference, whether you prefer a shorter, stronger cup or a longer, milder one.
- Place your cup onto the dip tray and press the button to start making your coffee
- Once the coffee is made, lift the handle to remove the pod and enjoy your coffee!

Top tips to make your brews even better:

- Always rinse out the water tank and use fresh water for a better-tasting cup of coffee
- Preheat your cup with hot water so the first sip is nice and warm
- Experiment with your coffee machine’s bar pressure for a stronger or milder taste

Maintenance and troubleshooting

Like any appliance in your kitchen, your coffee pod machine will work its best with regular care. We recommend that you clean the drip tray and water tank regularly. It's also important to descale your machine. This helps prevent mineral buildup, which can affect how well your machine works and even make your coffee taste a little off. We recommend descaling every three months or after 300 cups.

If you encounter any issues with your coffee pod machine, don't worry. Try these simple troubleshooting steps to fix your machine.

- Check the water tank: Ensure it's securely locked in place.
- Inspect the pod holder: Make sure it's clean and inserted correctly.
- Contact NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® support: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, reach out to our customer support team who will be glad to assist in helping to fix your machine.
